Visual Design: King County DCHS Connection Map

Role and Impact

As a designer and visual strategist, I addressed a critical communication need within the Affordable Housing Committee project: creating a custom, digitally painted map of King County. This unique visual component highlighted the geographical reach of the AHC’s work. It enabled a deeper understanding of its interconnected nature, visually representing the network of cities and towns across the county.

Deliverables

  • Conceived and implemented a custom, digitally painted map of King County, which became a central visual element in the final six-page trifold.

  • Created an intricate network visualization on the map, featuring dots representing all 45+ cities and towns in King County, connected by lines, thus showcasing the extensive connections and collaborative relationships inherent in AHC’s work.

  • Designed a custom geometric gradient that transitioned from forest green, through shades of teal and blue, to purple, imparting a sense of depth and dynamism to the map and underscoring the region’s diversity.

Reflection: “This project allowed me to harness the power of visual design to tell a more compelling story about the AHC's work. Using a custom, digitally painted map not only added aesthetic value but also served as a visual metaphor for the interconnectedness of the various cities and towns within King County. It reiterated the AHC's mission in a non-verbal, impactful manner, creating a strong visual narrative. The choice of a unique geometric gradient further emphasized the variety and interconnectedness of the communities while adding an engaging and dynamic element to the design.”
