Graphic Design: MLK Day Committee

Role and Impact

As the lead designer for the MLK Day Committee Poster project, I was challenged with creating a graphic that stood out in a government context, typically characterized by information-heavy designs. I decided to take a minimalist approach, relying on the power of visual storytelling rather than text to communicate the committee’s mission and invite participation.

Deliverables

  • Poster Design: Designed a unique 9x16 minimalist poster suitable for mobile viewing. The only text on the poster was “MLK Day Committee” and the subtitle “Celebrate. Connect. Contribute.”

  • Custom Illustration: Crafted a bespoke illustration of a resolute-looking MLK bust with a surreal, mid-century modern style background. This design utilized a color palette of teals, sand, fuchsia, orange, yellow, purples, and darker teals, along with silhouettes of PNW-type pines, to evoke a sense of tranquility and reverence.

  • Animation: Created an animated version of the poster with floating fireflies or energy spirits, adding a dynamic layer to the visual communication

Reflection: “Working on the MLK Day Committee Poster project presented a unique opportunity to break the mold of conventional government designs. By taking a minimalist approach and focusing on visual impact over text, I created a compelling poster aligned with the committee’s mission to celebrate, connect, and contribute in honor of MLK Day. The design process for this project reinforced the value of simplicity and visual storytelling in effectively engaging audiences and promoting initiatives.”
